Blur or sharpen JPEG detail

Smoothing blurs hard edges, which do not compress well in JPEGs. Higher numbers produce more blurring in the exported or saved JPEG, typically creating smaller files. A smoothing setting of about 3 reduces the size of the image while still maintaining reasonable quality.

Use Sharpen JPEG Edges when exporting or saving JPEGs with text or fine detail to preserve the sharpness of these areas. This setting increases file size.

Do either of the following:

  • To blur detail, set Smoothing in the Optimize panel.

  • To sharpen detail, select Sharpen JPEG Edges from the Optimize panel options menu.
